“ONE MINUTE LESS FOR MILLION SMILES” 2013

Ho Chi Minh City on June 05, 2013 - In response to the World Environment Day, Vietnam Brewery Limited (VBL) officially launched the "One minute less for millions smiles" program in 2013. This is the 2nd year VBL launched the action program for the environment to contribute to raising awareness about saving and protecting water resources of the staff and the community, as well as contribute to bringing clean water to many localities.

"One minute less for millions smiles" program in 2013 includes many practical activities at the localities with offices and breweries such as Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quy Nhon, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City, Tien Giang and Can Tho. . Accordingly, VBL staff will clean canals, rivers, ponds and lakes in the areas locating company breweries and offices, disseminating to people about the importance of clean water and call for water saving by simple actions like locking the tap while brushing your teeth or taking soap, using washer with correct power capacity, using water in cleaning and irrigation more efficiently, etc. The propaganda of saving clean water is conducted vibrantly on  www.1phuttietkiemtrieuniemvui.com.vn and www.facebook.com/1phuttietkiemtrieuniemvui.

Besides the propagation of water resource saving and protection, the "One minute less for millions smiles" in 2013 also contributed to bring clean water to the community. Specifically, the launching date of the program (5/6/2013) in Tien Giang, the company  funded VND 300 million for representative of Tien Giang province to renovate one bored well which heavily impacted by alum and to improve the main pipeline, supplying clean water for households in Tan Thanh commune, Tan Phuoc District, Tien Giang. The program will continue to support the construction or renovation, remodeling of clean water project for communities in other locations.

The "One minute less for millions smiles" program is considered the practical community activity of VBL to raise awareness of environmental protection and water resource protection for today and for the future.

According to the UN, there are now more than 1 billion people worldwide are in lack of clean water for daily activities. It is forecast that, by 2025, there will be approximately 1.8 billion people living in areas of absolute water scarcity and two thirds of the global population have difficulty in accessing clean water resources. In Vietnam, according to statistics from the Ministry of Health, it is estimated to have 17.2 million people (equivalent to 21.5% of the population) are using water resources that have not been tested or gone through treatment. The lack of clean water seriously affects the health, production and human life. According to the integrated assessment of the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, up to 80% of patients in Vietnam have diseases due to water contamination. Each year, Vietnam has more than 9,000 people dying of poor water sources and sanitary conditions. To address properly the issue of clean water will help control many diseases, while ensuring the basic conditions for human health.

For years, VBL has always played the flagship role in the protection of environment in general and water resources in particular. From the use of 6 liters of water / 1 liter of beer in the first years of operation, by investing in innovative equipment, building awareness of water saving in production, VBL has achieved the consumption level of 3.6 liters of water / 1 liter of beer, and is continuing to take efforts to reach the target of 2.5 liters of water / 1 liter of beer.

In addition to the environment action program of "One minute less for millions smiles", the young talent supporting program - "For water resource security" of VBL has been being built and implemented over a period of 5 years from 2012 to 2017. Specifically, VBL grants annual scholarships for students attending specialized universities of Environment, Environmental Economics and grants funding for researches of young scientists on water environment with a total value of over 7.5 billion dong in 5 years. The program is designed to encourage and develop a team of young scientists, who will then contribute to the research, management and conservation of water resources in Vietnam.
