Ho Chi Minh City, April 3, 2025 – Today, HEINEKEN Vietnam announces that it has achieved its 2030 water balancing ambition in the Tien River Basin - five years ahead of schedule. The company is now replenishing over 690 million liters of water each year back into the region’s natural ecosystem, surpassing the total amount of water in products brewed in its Tien Giang brewery. This achievement was made possible through strong collaboration between the company and its strategic partners, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, WWF-Vietnam, local authorities in Tien Giang Province, and the management board of the Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve. It marks a significant milestone in HEINEKEN Vietnam’s sustainability journey towards a better Vietnam.
Since 2022, HEINEKEN Vietnam has been working with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, WWF-Vietnam, and local authorities to restore and conserve water in key river basins, including the Red, Dong Nai, and Tien rivers. By the end of 2024, these efforts had replenished over 559 million liters of water each year into the Tien River Basin. This achievement was driven by a range of initiatives at the Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve, including planting 12.3 hectares of melaleuca and native trees, improving hydrological management systems, upgrading sluice gates to better control water flow, and deploying mobile pumps to prevent fires. The program also empowers local authorities through training in water management and biodiversity conservation, while engaging communities to raise public awareness about protecting vital water resources.
Beside this project, HEINEKEN Vietnam has also worked closely with local authorities and partners to bring clean water to communities across the country. Through initiatives such as installing drilled wells, constructing pipelines and storage tanks, and providing filtration and desalination systems, the company has helped replenish 131 million liters of water into the Tien River Basin each year. These efforts have made a lasting difference, improving access to clean water for thousands of local residents.
Reflecting on the achievement, Ms. Pham Thi Truc Thanh, Head of Sustainability at HEINEKEN Vietnam, said:“At HEINEKEN Vietnam, protecting water and nature is at the heart of our sustainability strategy. Thanks to strong partnerships and decisive actions, we have realized our water balancing ambition in the Tien River Basin five years ahead of schedule - in one of Vietnam’s most water-stressed regions. This milestone is a powerful reminder of how business, government, and civil society can come together to tackle urgent environmental challenges. It also energizes our commitment to continue brewing a better Vietnam and contribute to the country’s sustainable development.”
For over 30 years, HEINEKEN Vietnam has remained deeply committed to standing by Vietnam and its people through its sustainability strategy. In the Tien River Basin - a region facing critical challenges such as groundwater decline, saltwater intrusion, and prolonged drought - the company’s achievement of its water balancing ambition not only helps protect the environment but also delivers practical support for local communities in agriculture and daily life. Into the future, HEINEKEN Vietnam looks forward to expanding its water conservation initiatives, contributing to healthy watersheds across Vietnam and bringing its sustainability ambitions to life.
