Ho Chi Minh City, 6th June 2025 – Today, HEINEKEN Vietnam officially updates the company’s achievements and progress in sustainability in 2024, highlighting strengthened partnerships and stakeholder collaboration as part of its commitment to brewing a better Vietnam in the country’s new era of growth.
“For HEINEKEN Vietnam, sustainability is a shared journey” - shares Pham Thi Truc Thanh, Head of Sustainability, HEINEKEN Vietnam. “In 2024, through the power of collective actions, we continued to make steady progress in sustainability, bringing positive impacts to Vietnam’s economy, society, and environment. These achievements have brought us closer to our sustainability ambitions and reaffirmed our strong commitment to growing together with Vietnam and its people.”
As Vietnam enters its new era of growth, HEINEKEN Vietnam continues to embed sustainability as the central to how the company runs its business and championing collective actions to realize its sustainability ambitions across three key pillars: Environment, Social, and Responsible Consumption.
Under the Environmental pillar, HEINEKEN Vietnam is currently using 98% renewable energy in its production, with thermal energy sourced from biomass, and the entire electricity demand covered by Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs). At the same time, the company has also explored and deployed technologies to optimize energy efficiency. In 2024, HEINEKEN Vietnam – Vung Tau became the first HEINEKEN brewery to implement a heat pump – an initiative that has helped the brewery reduce its thermal energy purchases by an average of 15% per month, thereby cutting CO₂ emissions by 0.01 kg per hectoliter of product.
Aiming to reach net-zero emissions across the value chain by 2040, HEINEKEN Vietnam also advanced initiatives to help its suppliers and partners in the supply chain develop emission reduction roadmaps for their operations. Specifically, the company teamed up with the Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VBCSD – VCCI) to host the “GHG Reduction & Energy Transition Toward Net Zero” workshop to update its strategic suppliers on relevant regulations and examples of good practices. This initiative was followed with multiple training sessions for the company’s steam suppliers – guiding them through HEINEKEN’s global sustainable biomass sourcing policy, thus driving collective efforts to reduce emissions in production and accelerate energy transition across the entire value chain.
HEINEKEN Vietnam also continued to maximize circularity in its production, maintaining its commitment to zero waste to landfill across all breweries, while increasing its packaging collection and recycling rates, with 98% of glass bottles and 94% of plastic crates reused in 2024. In addition, the company successfully piloted its 'Can-to-Can' project in collaboration with an overseas aluminum rolling mill, paving the way for a fully closed-loop recycling system for aluminum cans once the initiative is rolled out. Through the project, over 850 tons of used aluminum cans were recovered and recycled into new ones, making it a promising example of cross-border collaboration to boost the use of high-quality recycled materials in packaging and promote circularity.
Toward healthy watersheds and nature, HEINEKEN Vietnam has officially achieved its 2030 water balancing ambition in the Tien River basin through several water initiatives in collaboration with its strategic partners and local authorities. The company is now replenishing over 690 million liters of water each year back into the region’s natural ecosystem, surpassing the total amount of water in products brewed in its Tien Giang brewery. Through the water conservation partnership program between HEINEKEN Vietnam, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, WWF-Vietnam, and the Dong Thap Muoi Ecological Reserve, nearly 560 million liters of water are being replenished into the region each year. Additionally, more than 131 million liters are contributed annually by community water projects implemented in Tien Giang province.
Under the Social pillar, HEINEKEN Vietnam remains committed to growing together with the Vietnamese people and being part of local communities. In 2024, amid many challenges caused by natural disasters and climate change, the company strengthened its social support to assist affected households and disadvantaged communities. Notable efforts included the delivery of 640,000 liters of clean water to Tien Giang province during the dry season; urgent support of 3.5 billion VND to communities affected by Typhoon Yagi in Northern Vietnam; continued partnership with the Vietnam Red Cross Society to organize its annual Tet charity program, supporting 7,100 households across 28 provinces with total contributions valued at VND 8.8 billion.
At the workplace, HEINEKEN Vietnam has stayed strongly committed to promoting a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion – with equal development opportunities for its employees. In recognition of these efforts, the Asia-Pacific office of UN Women honored the company among the top three in the “Gender Equality in the Workplace” category at the 2024 Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) Awards.
Under the Responsible Consumption pillar, HEINEKEN Vietnam continues to strengthen and expand its collaboration to diversify initiatives that foster a positive culture in consumers’ drinking habits. Ahead of Lunar New Year, the company, in collaboration with Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Police Department (PC08), set up “Refresh Stations” at 10 major city gateways to promote the “Drink responsibly – Drive safely” message. At these stations, motorbike drivers were offered high-quality helmets, light snacks, and Heineken® 0.0 – a 0.0% ABV malt beverage. To further amplify responsible drinking among the driver communities, Heineken® 0.0 partnered with the Gumball 3000 supercar showcase and ride-hailing platforms Xanh SM and BE.
2024 also marked 14 consecutive years of partnership between HEINEKEN Vietnam and the National Traffic Safety Committee (NTSC) in promoting “When you drink, never drive”. To celebrate this milestone, the two partners rolled out the “Drink Don’t Drive” program with a series of awareness-raising activities and practical solutions aimed at students, office workers, and consumers at points of sale. Through these efforts, HEINEKEN Vietnam and NTSC continued to strengthen community-wide awareness and reinforce responsible drinking habits.
